I was just looking at the Chorley website to see what the prices are now, and came across this bit of news.
Matt Edgington - ex Boro,Chorley and numerous over clubs in the area, who was a victim of a vicious attack last October has been called up the England Visibily Impaired Team.
Matt played his first competitive match since the attack last Saturday in Elton Vale Reserves' 4-0 win in the Manchester League Division 2 match against Springhead Reserves. He put in some precise corners from which his side scored one, and although still not 100% back to his peak fitness, according to his father John, "he looked sharp and his ball control was very good, not excellent yet but very good."
But his call up to the England VI squad, as he has reduced vision in his right eye following the injuries that he sustained, has come as a surprise but one which he and his family will cherish.
"It's a fantastic set-up with everything replicating the full senior side set up," continued John. "If he gets in, then he will travel with them to a variety of tournaments including one in Belarus and then in Turkey. It's a fantastic opportunity for him and one which will not affect his normal football."
There is still a long way to go for Matthew and his family although the signs are that the 25-year-old is coping with life with reduced vision and is, at least, back playing the game he loves although he may need to wear a 'rugby scrum cap' to protect his head should it be necessary. "It is very difficult for him to take that on board but so far he has coped very well with almost everything so hopefully he will understand and do the right thing."
For the many people who saw Matt prior to the cowardly incident in Manchester that Saturday evening and have seen him since, that spark that set him apart is still very much in evidence and his ambition remains to be a part of the Ramsbottom United team in the future as well as going back to work and to start driving again.
His father John and mother Pauline have been through an incredible amount of hard times but continue to support him, as they always would. "I am so very proud of him," added Dad. "It still hurts so much to watch him sometimes but in fact he is showing us the way forward and that is a huge credit to his determination.
"Pauline and I can recall everything that has happened over the past 8+ months but no doubt at some time in the future we will be able to look at our son and forget the terrible things that have happened to him."
