From the Lancashire Evening Post...
After looking comfortable interval leaders at Stainton Park, Burscough exited the United Co-Op Lancashire Trophy as the hosts stormed back with two early second half goals, leaving the Linnets facing a vain bid to rescue the game amid torrential rain. Burscough opened with some delightful football and while they failed to produce many clear-cut early chances, they pinned the hosts in their own half for much of the first period.
Radcliffe did cause one problem in the eighth minute, Linnets full-back Lewis Field and keeper Kyle Clancy with a communication breakdown as they dealt with a wayward cross, the latter scurrying back to his line to save a Field back-header.
Burscough had a golden chance as Matty Kay hoisted forward to Gary McEvatt, who headed on for Darren Byers, but with the goal at his mercy Byers' shot was saved low to his left by home keeper Lloyd Rigby.
The Linnets started to turn possession into opportunity as the half progressed.
Rigby saved at McEvatt's feet, then Darren Brookfield fired wide at the far post after a quality cross from Field.
Mark Drew got the better of a tussle with Field, but lobbed over the Linnets crossbar.
But Drew's attack was an isolated one and in the 42nd minute Burscough finally took the lead.
Kay lifted into the goalmouth, but Rigby produced a weak punch and the ball fell to Dave Roberts 20 yards from goal, stepping into the dropping ball, hitting a left-foot drive low into the net.
Kicking downhill in the second half, Burscough were expected to dominate once more, but Radcliffe emerged with other ideas.
Inside a minute, with the Burscough defence flat-footed, former Linnets striker Adam Roscoe had a shot saved by Clancy, when he should really have scored.
That chance altered the whole balance of the game, and in the 48th minute Radcliffe went on the attack, with keeper Clancy the culprit, losing his grip on the wet ball as Barrie Keeling challenged, squaring across goal, presenting Roscoe with an easy finish.
Eleven minutes later, Radcliffe took the lead, Alastair Brown threading a wonderfully-weighted ball behind the defence to Drew, cutting in at pace to rifle under a helpless Clancy and into the net.
Burscough were not at the races and Clancy made a fine save from Eddy Stanford after Jody Banim set him up, then Roscoe had an effort saved by Clancy and sent the rebound curling wide while Banim hit the post.
Andy Gray made changes, introducing Tommy Taylor, Matt Parry and James McCulloch, and Taylor was unlucky to have a far-post shot hit keeper Rigby's foot.
The last 20 minutes were played amid a monsoon, and Radcliffe spent the last five minutes with 10 men, Banim replaced due to injury then appearing to show dissent to the referee and receiving a red card as he entered the dug-out.
Burscough were denied one last time in the 88th minute. Brookfield drove diagonally into the net from eight yards, but up went a flag and offside was given.
It just wasn't Burscough's night, but they should have had the game won before the interval.
And a clip from the Bury Times..
...visiting manager Andy Gray must have been mystified by his side’s performance in the second half.
They were simply outplayed by a Boro side playing some of their best football of the season so far.
